Industry Leadership

Setting New Standards for Innovation and Excellence

For over 60 years, Prolec has invested in research, technology and new product design, remaining focused on improving industry standards and leading innovations to serve the evolving needs of its customers and the power delivery industry. To this end, the company supports and participates in many industry groups and organizations, including IEEE, CIGRE, AEIC, EPRI, Doble, Weidmann, NRECA, NWPPA, RMEL and IEC to help set and revise standards, educate when asked and keep our fingers on the pulse of our customers’ needs. We also host our own Regional Technical Seminars throughout the year, addressing current industry topics requested by customers and channel partners throughout our interactions with them and offer a Transformer Concepts and Applications Seminar bi-annually for those looking to further enhance their product knowledge in a non-stressful, non-commercial environment.

Prolec employs a large number of industry experts to teach the aforementioned classes and help our customers determine what needs to happen to keep power flowing smoothly through their transformers. From specification review to our extensive database of existing engineered transformer designs and reverse-engineering capabilities, all the way through to installation and comprehensive maintenance on virtually any manufacturer’s brand, we strive to be the “go to” technical resource for everything related to power transformers.

IEEE PES Transformers Committee

Prolec actively supports and participates in the IEEE PES Transformers Committee, an industry group with the following scope:

  • Treatment of all matters in which the dominant factors are the application, design, construction, testing and operation of transformers, reactors and other similar equipment. Included is treatment of the following:
    • Transmission and Distribution Transformers
    • Voltage Regulators (step and induction regulators)
    • Reactors and Grounding Transformers
    • HVDC Converter Transformers and Smoothing Reactors
    • Power Semiconductor Rectifier Transformers
    • Instrument Transformers (voltage and current transformers)
    • Insulation and Dielectric Issues Relating to Transformers
    • Outdoor Apparatus Bushings
    • Insulating Fluids
    • Underground Transformers and Network Protectors
    • Phase Angle Regulating Transformers
  • Sponsorship and development (either alone or jointly with other technical committees and/or organizations) of standards, recommended practices, guidelines and policies as well as preparation of position papers and/or documents, technical conferences and/or sessions on matters related to items above.
  • Liaison and cooperation with other technical committees, societies, groups and associations concerned with various aspects of items above.

Our employees hold a number of key positions within the Committee and work year round with other industry experts to ensure standards reflect the most up-to-date information and technology available for the most effective, efficient and dependable power grid results.

Engineering & Design Tool Enhancements

Prolec’s engineers review and develop analytical and design tools on a continual basis to help ensure reliability, consistency and peak efficiency in our manufactured products at the lowest possible Total Ownership Cost. These tools are used for designing production units that are highly customized to meet specific requirements of each end user’s power system:

  • Design optimization programs
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) programs
  • Electromagnetic analysis tools (for stray loss and mechanical force analyses)
  • Mechanical stress analysis
  • Heat transfer analysis
  • Statistical process development (Six Sigma)
  • Dielectric stress analysis
